When Someone Shows You Who They Are

Maya Angelou once said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” Outside of Scripture, it may be the best practical wisdom I’ve ever heard. It lines up perfectly with the way the Bible teaches us to walk in discernment and not self-deception.

Jesus put it this way: “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45). Sooner or later, what’s inside a person will come out — in their words, in their tone, in their patterns of behavior. We may not see it in the beginning, but given time, people will reveal what they truly believe and value. It’s tempting to overlook those first glimpses, to explain them away, or to hold on to what we wish were true. But Scripture warns us not to live by wishful thinking, but by fruit. “You will recognize them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16).

Believing someone when they show you who they are is not cold-hearted or cynical; it’s wise. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to “guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Guarding our hearts doesn’t mean shutting people out — it means taking seriously what they’ve already revealed. If their words or actions expose pride, deceit, or cruelty, we should not pretend otherwise. If they reveal humility, kindness, and faith, we can receive that as well.

Forgiveness is always a Christian duty, but denial never is. Forgiveness sets us free from bitterness, while discernment protects us from walking into the same trap twice. Angelou’s wisdom, seen in the light of Scripture, is not a call to suspicion but a call to honesty. God Himself is a God of truth. To walk in truth means we don’t have to excuse or rewrite someone’s story. We can love them, pray for them, and accept what they have shown us — the first time.
