Waiting Until the Cows Come Home

We’ve all heard the old phrase: “I’ll be waiting until the cows come home.” It’s colorful, country, and a little bit frustrating—because it describes waiting on something that may never actually happen. If you’ve ever sat by the phone, refreshing your inbox, or replaying a conversation in your head hoping for a different outcome, you know what it feels like. That kind of waiting wears you out.

The Bible doesn’t call us to wait in that sense. Biblical waiting isn’t passive or powerless—it’s active trust. Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage.” Notice the verbs: wait, be strong, take courage. That’s not slumping in a chair staring at the driveway until the cows wander back. That’s standing firm, choosing faith over despair, even while the outcome is still uncertain.

Practically, that means waiting with God instead of waiting on people. If I’m waiting for someone to finally change, apologize, or show up, I can lose years of my life. But if I shift that same posture into God’s hands—“Lord, I trust You with this”—then the waiting becomes fruitful. It’s no longer empty time; it’s preparation, growth, and strengthening.

So yes, the cows may or may not come home. People may or may not follow through. But God always does. Waiting in Him is never wasted. Maybe the phrase should be rewritten: “I’ll be waiting until the Lord comes through.” Because He always will.

Takeaway: Stop waiting for the cows—start waiting on the Lord.
