The Power of Nothing

Nothing feels terrifying. When something we’ve depended on is gone — a relationship, a dream, a plan — we’re left staring at the void. Our first instinct is to resist it, to fill the emptiness, to stir the echoes of what once was. But Scripture has a different perspective: “As having nothing, yet possessing everything” (2 Corinthians 6:10). In God’s economy, nothing is never the end.

The truth is, “nothing” has power when placed in God’s hands. Our strength, our striving, our illusions of control often need to be stripped away so we can discover the sufficiency of Christ. Paul says, “If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself” (Galatians 6:3). Recognizing our nothingness isn’t defeat — it’s clarity. It’s the moment when pride falls away and God’s grace can fill the space.

In practical terms, that means we don’t have to fear emptiness. We don’t have to pretend the loss didn’t happen. Instead, we can call it what it is: nothing. And then we can proclaim what is greater: “Christ is everything” (Colossians 3:11). The absence of what we thought we needed becomes the very place where God meets us with His presence.

The power of nothing is that it makes room for everything that lasts. When we stop chasing shadows and clinging to what cannot stay, we find ourselves held by the One who never leaves. Nothing is not the end of the story. It is the clearing where Christ writes His fullness.

Prayer:
Lord, teach me not to fear nothingness. Strip away what I cannot keep so I may receive what only You can give. Remind me that when I have nothing, I am not empty, because Christ is everything. Amen.
