Stop the Mental Ping-Pong

There’s a Greek word in the Bible, dialogismós, that basically means going back and forth in your own head until you wear yourself out. It’s self-based reasoning that runs in circles. We’ve all been there: replaying conversations, second-guessing decisions, worrying about what someone meant. The more you think, the less peace you have.  That’s what dialogismós does. It feels like you’re working toward an answer, but really you’re just stirring the pot. Instead of moving closer to God’s truth, you get stuck in your own loop.

In counseling, I see this a lot. People come in exhausted from overthinking. They’ve run through every “what if,” built imaginary court cases in their heads, and ended up more anxious than when they started. The Bible already warned us about this. God never called us to solve everything in our heads; He told us to cast our cares on Him.  So here’s the shift: when you catch yourself going back and forth, stop and name it. “This is me reasoning myself into confusion.”  Then, instead of following the loop, hand it over to God. Peace doesn’t come from replaying the tape. Peace comes from surrendering the tape and letting Him speak into the silence.
