Is the Person Who Betrayed You a Peter or a Judas?

Few wounds cut deeper than betrayal. When someone you trusted walks away, denies you, or wounds you with silence or deception, the questions swirl: Why did this happen? Who are they really? Will they ever come back?

Scripture gives us two stark portraits of betrayal: Judas and Peter. Judas sold Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. His betrayal was deliberate, calculated, and final. Peter, on the other hand, swore he would never deny Jesus — and then, under pressure, denied Him three times. Judas ended his story in despair; Peter ended his in restoration. Both betrayed, but their endings could not have been more different.

When someone betrays you, the truth is, you don’t yet know whether they are a Peter or a Judas. Only time will tell. Will their heart soften, like Peter’s, leading to repentance and reconciliation? Or will they remain hardened, like Judas, closing the door on restoration? That part is not for us to decide. Our call is to entrust the story to God, who alone sees the heart.

In the meantime, we protect our own hearts. We forgive because Christ has forgiven us (Ephesians 4:32), not because we know how their story will end. We leave vindication in God’s hands (Romans 12:19). And we hold hope with open palms — ready to receive reconciliation if God writes it, but secure in Him if He does not.

The person who betrayed you may be a Peter, returning in tears one day, or they may be a Judas, choosing to remain far off. Either way, your story is safe in God’s hands. You don’t have to carry the weight of sorting it out today. Only time will tell their ending — but God already knows yours. “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion”(Philippians 1:6).
