EMDR and Grace

Picture
When people come to counseling, they often carry more than just present struggles. They carry old wounds — traumas that live in the nervous system like echoes that won’t fade. One evidence-based tool that has helped many is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). It’s a way of processing traumatic memories so they lose their sharp sting.

But here’s the important part: EMDR is not the answer — Christ is. Healing doesn’t come because we’ve mastered a technique or discovered the “secret step.” Healing comes because God is gracious, present, and faithful. EMDR is simply one tool He may use, a means of helping the mind and body loosen what they’ve held onto for too long.

For some, EMDR opens a door that allows them to experience what Scripture has promised all along: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). For others, a different approach may be what God uses. The point is not the tool itself. The point is that God meets us in our pain and carries us toward freedom.

So if you’ve ever wondered about EMDR, think of it not as something you must do, but as something you may prayerfully consider. It’s not a replacement for grace — it’s simply one way grace can work itself out through practical means. And if God leads you down that path, it will be because He wants to bring more of His peace into your story, not because you found the “perfect” technique.
