Christ Is the Gift

Many of us spend years in the Christian life asking God for things: “Lord, give me patience.” “Lord, give me more love.” “Lord, make me more humble.” We imagine that God doles out virtues like a storekeeper handing out parcels — a little bit here, a little bit there. But that’s not how the New Testament describes it.

Scripture tells us that God has given us one gift to meet every need: His Son. “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life” (1 John 5:11–12). That means when I’m impatient, the answer isn’t to beg for patience; it’s to rest in Christ and let Him be my patience. When I feel unloving, the solution isn’t to strain harder, but to yield to Christ, who is love.

This is the great freedom of the gospel. I don’t have to stockpile virtues as if they’re items in a pantry. I simply abide in Christ, and the Spirit produces His fruit in me (Galatians 5:22). Sometimes the fruit looks like joy, sometimes peace, sometimes gentleness — but the source is always the same.

So when you feel inadequate — and you will — take it as an opportunity to lean more deeply on Christ. Don’t despair over the lack you see in yourself. Instead, see it as an open door: one more place where Christ can prove Himself to be enough. He is the gift. He is the answer. And He is always sufficient.
