A Tribute to John MacArthur: Anxiety-Free Living

Hearing of John MacArthur’s passing has caused me to reflect on how much his teaching shaped my early Christian walk. One series in particular, Anxiety-Free Living, became a lifeline for me. It wasn’t just another Bible study; it was truth that carried me through those early days when worry and fear seemed normal emotions I could do nothing about.

In that series, MacArthur unpacked Jesus’ words in Luke 12 and Matthew 6: “Do not be anxious about your life.” He showed us that this was not a suggestion, nor was it wishful thinking. It was a command rooted in the character of God. If the Father clothes the lilies and feeds the ravens, how much more will He care for His children? That simple, profound reality reoriented my faith: anxiety isn’t overcome by effort, but by trust in God’s sovereignty.

As the years went on, those truths became part of how I ministered to others. In counseling sessions, I returned to those same passages and principles, helping people see that worry is not inevitable. The peace of God, as Paul describes in Philippians 4:7, really can guard our hearts and minds. I’ve watched men and women breathe easier, not because circumstances changed, but because they discovered the freedom that comes from resting in the Lord’s care.

For me, Anxiety-Free Living is part of John MacArthur’s enduring legacy. His clarity, his uncompromising trust in Scripture, and his insistence that God’s promises are sufficient all shaped me profoundly. I am deeply grateful. His work helped me live more freely, and it has helped me guide others to do the same.

As MacArthur himself once said in that series:
“To worry is to doubt God; to be free from anxiety is to trust Him completely.”
