100 Pennies or 4 Quarters?

As we grow older, most of us notice a shift in our friendships. In youth, it’s easy to have a wide circle, dozens of acquaintances, and an endless stream of social connections. But with time comes discernment. We begin to realize that it is better to have a few deep, dependable relationships than a hundred surface-level ones. As the saying goes: would you rather have 100 pennies, or 4 quarters?

Scripture reminds us of this truth. Proverbs 18:24 says, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” The sheer number of friends isn’t what sustains us in hard times. It’s the faithful few who walk with us through valleys and rejoice with us on the mountaintops.

Jesus Himself modeled this. While He ministered to multitudes, He drew closest to the twelve disciples, and even within them, He invested deeply in Peter, James, and John. His example shows us that intimacy and accountability are cultivated best in smaller circles where trust and honesty can flourish. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 also reminds us: “Two are better than one… if either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”

Tightening your friend circle isn’t about exclusion; it’s about stewardship. Our time, energy, and hearts are limited, and God calls us to invest wisely. Deep friendships sharpen us in faith, challenge us in truth, and strengthen us in love (Proverbs 27:17). So if you find yourself with fewer friends than in earlier years, don’t see it as loss. See it as refinement. Four quarters will always be worth more than a hundred pennies.
